Gravatars are the images left next to your comments when you comment, if you don’t have a gravatar set-up I think it shows some kind of default image. Gravatars work by assigning an image of your choice to an email address of your choice, once that’s done anywhere that you use that email address that has gravatars enabled your image will show up.

I really don’t know why WordPress uses this, took me ages to figure out it was done by using a third party service.
